Definition
By default, a single-member LLC is a disregarded entity and a multi-member LLC is a partnership. The check-the-box election on Form 8832 allows LLCs to elect corporate (C-corp) treatment, after which an S election on Form 2553 is available.
Examples
- A single-member LLC files Schedule C with the owner's Form 1040 by default.
