Marketplace VAT rules do not make an overseas seller disappear

The hook

Saying 'the platform handles VAT' is often only half the truth for overseas sellers into the UK.

HMRC says marketplaces can become liable for VAT on certain sales, including important low-value and UK-held-stock cases. But the same official guidance also leaves room for import VAT, customs and registration questions on the seller side. So platform liability on the sale does not always mean the seller is out of the tax picture.

The takeaway

For e-commerce businesses, the safest question is not who charged VAT on the order, but what obligations still exist around stock, imports and registration.
