Standard Deduction
A flat dollar amount that taxpayers can subtract from AGI without itemizing.

Definition
The standard deduction is doubled by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act through 2025. For 2024 it is $14,600 single, $21,900 head of household, and $29,200 married filing jointly. Additional amounts apply for taxpayers age 65 or older or blind.
Examples
- A married couple filing jointly takes the $29,200 standard deduction on their 2024 return.
