Definition
MFS is often less favorable than MFJ because several credits and deductions are denied or reduced (EITC, education credits, IRA deduction, student-loan interest). Some couples nonetheless elect MFS for liability protection, separation, or for state-tax reasons.
Examples
- A couple in the process of divorce files MFS to keep their tax matters separate.
