Definition

Head of household provides a higher standard deduction and more favorable bracket thresholds than single filing status. The taxpayer must be unmarried at year-end and pay more than half the cost of maintaining a household for a qualifying child or qualifying relative.

Examples

  • A single parent with a qualifying child living in their home for more than half the year files as head of household.
