Definition
Self Assessment is the UK filing system under which taxpayers provide the information needed to establish the correct tax liability. It is better understood as a process with registration, filing, payment, and penalty rules rather than as one isolated form.
Examples
- A first-time filer may need to notify HMRC by 5 October before the later online filing deadline arrives.
- Penalty analysis depends on where the taxpayer failed inside the Self Assessment process.
