Definition

Gross income is one of the foundational federal income-tax concepts. It is the starting point for determining what enters the tax base before exclusions, deductions, credits, and other modifications are applied.

Examples

  • Compensation, business income, interest, rents, and royalties are listed examples of gross income in section 61.
  • Many tax disputes begin by asking whether an item is gross income before asking whether another rule excludes it.
